NC Gets Green Jobs Stimulus Grant

WASHINGTON — North Carolina will receive more than $1 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act green jobs competitive grants.

The Employment Security Commission of North Carolina will receive $946,034 to collect, analyze and publicize information about green jobs. In addition, Telamon Corporation, a Raleigh non-profit, will receive a $100,000 grant to boost green industry training.

The NC Employment Security Commission grant will be used to disseminate information about the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries so that workers will have easy access to resources and information to help them find jobs.

Telamon’s Green Capacity Building Grant will expand their green job training capacity. Telamon is a Raleigh-based non-profit organization that provides education, job training, child care, emergency services, and housing opportunities to communities in 12 states, including North Carolina. This money will allow them to provide expanded education and training in green industry skills.

Other recent green energy Stimulus grants invested in NC include:

·         In August, Charlotte’s Celgard received a $49 million stimulus grant to produce components of next-generation, lithium-ion batteries.

·         In October, Charlotte’s Duke Energy and Raleigh’s Progress Energy each received a $200 million grant to invest in a smart energy grid and update the current Thomas Edison-era energy grid.

Senator Hagan worked with her Senate colleagues to craft the Recovery Act to create jobs and jumpstart the economy. Last week, she held a roundtable discussion on economic recovery at Charlotte’s Central Piedmont Community and went to a jobs fair in Oxford, NC.
