Changes To ‘Cash For Clunkers’ Program

NBC — Some last minute changes in the Cash for Clunkers program have put the brakes on some car deals already in the works.

The EPA changed gas mileage figures on some older vehicles last week, which changed the eligibility for the cash sales incentive on about 100 vehicles.

As a result, some vehicles no longer qualify because their combined mileage rating was revised upwards while others that hadn’t qualified before got in.

For example, a 1993 Camry wagon v6 original EPA’s combined rating was 18 mpg; now its rating is 19 mpg the same goes for the 1992 saab 900s.

The EPA says the changes were made after the agency double checked its fuel efficiency rating on more than 30,000 1984 and newer vehicles.

To be eligible the clunker must have a combined rating of 18 miles per gallon or lower.

The buyer gets a $3,500 incentive of the new car gets 4 to 9 mpg more or $4,500 for 10 mpg.
