Area Mayors Discuss Green Options At Sept. 4 Trade Show

RALEIGH, N.C. — The NC Triangle Chapter of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and the North Carolina Solar Center present the fourth annual GreenNC commercial green building tradeshow taking place at the McKimmon Conference Center in Raleigh, NC on Thursday, Sept. 4.

This annual event is the only one of its kind in the state and has been leading the way for the expansion of green commercial building in the Southeast for the past three years. A prominent example of the expansion of green commercial building is the new Raleigh Convention Center which will open the day before GreenNC and is expected to achieve certification in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program, which is the highly regarded US Green Building Council developed commercial green building rating system.

This year the trade show’s luncheon will feature a panel of four North Carolina Mayors who have signed the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. The panel will consist of the Mayors of Asheville, Salisbury, Wake Forest, and Raleigh (City Councilman Russ Stephenson will represent the Mayor of Raleigh).  These mayors are leading their cities and towns in the battle against climate change and will discuss their efforts in this endeavor. Under the Agreement, participating cities commit to take the following three actions:

-      Strive to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol targets in their own communities, through actions ranging from anti-sprawl land-use policies to urban forest restoration projects to public information campaigns;

-      Urge their state governments, and the federal government, to enact policies and programs to meet or beat the greenhouse gas emission reduction target suggested for the United States in the Kyoto Protocol — 7% reduction from 1990 levels by 2012; and

-      Urge the U.S. Congress to pass the bipartisan greenhouse gas reduction legislation, which would establish a national emission trading system.

The panel of mayors will lead a discussion with over two hundred building industry professionals, civic and business leaders, and others interested in green building in North Carolina during the GreenNC luncheon.  Throughout the day the trade show hall will be packed with 68 exhibitors involved in green commercial building in North Carolina.  New at this year’s show is a residential pavilion featuring several exhibitors of green products and services for homes. The GreenNC exhibitors range from manufacturers of daylighting equipment and systems to manufacturers of recycled flooring products to green consultants, architects, and engineers.  The tradeshow is open to the public with no registration or fee from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The luncheon is also open to the public, but there is a registration fee and a limited number of seats available.
