Carbon Dioxide Levels Rising
WASHINGTON (AP) – Government scientists warn that greenhouse gases are accumulating in the earth’s atmosphere faster than in years past.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that carbon dioxide levels have increased by 2.4 parts per million last year.
Since 2000, yearly increases of two parts per million or more have been common. That’s more than double the annual increases from the 1960s.
NOAA scientists say some countries, particularly those in Europe, have taken steps to cut their carbon dioxide emissions. But carbon dioxide levels have continued to increase, mainly from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.
